The White Album The Beatles
|
Have you ever played the thing all the way to the end without skipping over a track ? I'm attempting it for the first time at the moment Normally i would leave out Glass Onion, Why don't we do it in the road, I will ,Don't pass me by. Helter Skelter Savoy truffle both Revolutions though I don't mind Revolution 9 very occasionally. It's excellent in parts but it is a very strange mixed bag. I've never known anyone who has played it from start to finish.

So much variety in the Beatles work it is difficult to believe anyone would love or hate all of it. They are iconic because they were the first of what followed - the same way that Elvis remains iconic.
Producing good music is not only about being good musicians ( great guitarists can play shot tunes) but a combination of many aspects including composition, originality and arrangement. Much of it came together for the Beatles.
* And give me an independent coffee shop over the muddy brown water served up by the big chains any day - though a Vanilla Latte sounds disgusting.

That it was made, what, 36 years ago and still generates debates such as this must surely indicate that the band had influence, if not talent.
"It's not the sort of thing I expected from a boy band,"
"It's too long,"
"The tracks are all in the wrong order,"
"It's clearly the work of four former band members put out as a contractual obligation,"
Whatever your opinion of it & the band, that it nudges you into forming one makes it one of the most successful pieces of art from the middle of the 20th century.
Of course, if you're of the opinion that good art can never be popular (and vice versa) then I suggest you fuck off back to Islington, where there's a Vanilla Latte waiting for you at that non-franchise chain and exceedingly expensive boutique coffee shop..

Well, the bits of some versions of "I am the Walrus" that go
Gloucester: (2:25) Now, good sir, wh-- (Lennon appears to change the channel away from the station here)[11] Edgar: (2:28) -- poor man, made tame by fortune -- (2:34) good pity --
Oswald: (3:52) Slave, thou hast slain me. Villain, take my purse. If ever thou wilt thrive,(4:02) bury my body, And give the (4:05) letters which thou find'st about me To (4:08) Edmund, Earl of Gloucester; (4:10)seek him out Upon the English party. O, (4:14) untimely Death! Edgar: (4:23) I know thee well: a (4:25) serviceable villain; As duteous to the (4:27) vices of thy mistress As badness would desire. Gloucester: What, is he dead? Edgar: (4:31) Sit you down father, rest you
are definitely Shakespeare...

You could tell who wrote their songs, even though they all had Lennon McCartney as composers, Lennon's had a bite to the lyrics, Macs were sugary shite for the most part

Swiss 3:57 ~ I agree that most of the bands you mention were technically better musicians than The Beatles ~ none of whom were particularly adept at playing there instruments
Personally I find McCartneys voice whiney & almost as irritating & his ridiculous style of wearing a guitar tight round his neck like a bow tie
Having said that, their music was ground breaking when you consider what went before. The concept of a "group" as opposed to a vocallist & backing group was revolutionary
Lennon & Mc McCartney wrote some very good stuff but I don't like the majority of their stuff ~ especially their ballads like Michelle & Yesterday = bloody awful
Guess that makes me a c#nt in Leonard Hatreds eyes ~ but I couldn't give a monkeys!

Explain? So I have to like all their stuff or I'm a cunt.
They did influence ELO which just about sums them up. Oh and they did give us Wings.
The Beatles are overrated shite. The Kinks, The Who ,The Stones, The Small Face, The Doors, The Seeds, Cream, Yardbirds are all better

No. keddy's argument implies that being a massive influence means they can't be crap. He isn't suggesting it's wrong to prefer someone else.

Rather fittingly, the Blackbird wouldn't exist without the Wright Brothers.

They are not mediocre, mate. Lennon and McCartney were fantastic song writers. The third George Harrison wrote a few classics, as well as you might know, . Frank Sinatra said 'Something' was the greatest love song of the ;late 20th century. i like the Doors but the End and when the 'Music's over drag on a bit. There's a lot of dope fugged buffoonery on those particular tracks. They certainly don't have the magic the quality of Sgt Pepper

Re: The White Album The Beatles

Certainly for their first album and early singles, they WERE a boy band, but quickly evolved as they grew.
Today it's "Once a boy band, ALWAYS a boy band" - applying that judgemental criteria of today to bands of the 1960s is as farcical as it is ignorant.
